#ProjectSpotlight: Solid tile roof extension turned playroom

An extension means a fresh start, a blank slate to make totally your own. When the Warricks wanted to create a space for their little girl, they didn’t want to just renovate an old space. They wanted a new one, and achieved this through, yes, you guessed it: an extension. A solid tile roof extension with French doors from Anglian, to be exact.

Their new space does an excellent job of blending in with the existing home, as do the dark roofing tiles. What’s more is, the Warricks didn’t actually have to do much – that’s the beauty of Anglian extensions. Design and even planning permission are all taken care of. The Warricks might have originally wanted a playroom for their daughter, but the space ended up becoming something the entire family can enjoy. And believe us when we say, it’s a space that deserves a lot of love.

Here’s what Mrs Warrick had to say about her new solid tile roof extension:

Q: How long have you lived in your property?

A: We bought the property as a new build and moved in June 2011.

Q: Why did you decide to have a tiled roof extension and what will your new living space be used for?

A: Having a baby made us realise how un-child-friendly our house was, and rather than giving over an existing room as a playroom, we started to look into an extension so that our daughter could have her own specialised playroom. That way, we could start with a blank canvas and ensure that it was tailored to her needs rather than try to retrofit anything. The furnishings we’ve chosen mean we can also use the room as a guest bedroom if needed.

Q: Did you get a quote from any other companies? If so,what made you choose Anglian?

A: I tried to get a quote from Prince Build (a local building company), and their first question was, “Have you got an architect’s drawings?” I didn’t, and didn’t want to project manage the build, so I looked up Anglian as I knew they provided the whole package.

Anglian took care of every step, from helping with the design, sorting out all the documents, site visits, permissions, build and finishing without me having to micromanage anything.

Q: Before contacting Anglian, were you aware of our tiled roof extension option? If so, how?

A: Yes. I looked on Anglian’s website and saw that they did conservatories, orangeries, brick extensions, etc.

Q: What factors determined your final choice of style and colour?

A: We already knew we wanted a brick extension with a tiled roof rather than a tailored conservatory, as I’ve heard a lot of people say they don’t get as much use out of their conservatories as they would like to due to it having high variations in temperature.

My parents have just had a tiled roof fitted to their existing conservatory, so we decided to get a “proper” extension from the word go rather than a conservatory that we may have lived to regret.

Here’s what Mrs Warrick had to say about the extension post-installation:

Q: What’s your opinion of the Anglian service and installation you’ve received? Did you have any concerns or requirements?

A: I’m delighted with the service I’ve received, and over the moon with the installation. Everyone I’ve spoken to at Anglian has been polite and helpful throughout. The planning permissions required were not what I expected due to permitted development being lifted in our area, but they were dealt with efficiently and I didn’t have to worry about any step in the process.

There were some changes to the design quite early on because of the survey, and nobody had any issues with these. Plans were simply redrawn and work continued. The standard of finish was very high and when a couple of very minor hiccups came to light, they were rectified well. I was kept well-informed of progress throughout the build. Everything was finished by the deadline originally agreed.

Q: How has the extension improved your living space?

A: Absolutely. The peace of mind we have gained from knowing our daughter has her own playroom that’s a safe space for her has been immense. We’ve found ourselves using the room even when she’s in bed, and we’ve spent a considerable amount of time in there.

We’re very much looking forward to being able to open out the space in the summer in particular and are thrilled with the extension.

Q: Would you recommend Anglian to your friends and family?

A: I would, and I already have.
