#AnglianAnswers: Why won’t my garage door open or close?

The whole purpose of a garage door is to keep your home and your belongings safe. So when it won’t open or close properly, the garage door’s purpose is kind of, well, defeated!

While it’s always best to consult an engineer if your garage door is malfunctioning (rather than toy around with it yourself), there are a few very easily-resolved issues that could be causing a problem. Read on for simple solutions to this week’s #AnglianAnswers question: Why won’t my garage door open or close?

If your door is electric:

If you’ve got an electric garage door that’s operated via remote control, there are a number of things that could be affecting its movement.

Electric garage door

  • There might be an issue with your remote control – Are you within range for your remote control to work? Check to make sure that the antenna on your garage door’s motor is hanging down, or that the batteries in your remote control are working.
  • Something’s in the way – Check to make sure there’s nothing blocking your garage door’s path, as this will automatically trigger it to not open or close all the way.
  • The photo eye isn’t working – The photo eye is what monitors when someone or something is in the garage door’s way. Ensure nothing is blocking its path across your garage (it operates via laser), and that the photo eye is free of all dirt and grime.

If your door is manual (or electric):

These issues could pertain to both a manual or an electric garage door, so have a look at the below section either way.

Manual garage door

  • The torsion springs have broken – Torsion springs are what help lift a garage door. If they break, you’ll hear a loud pop or bang. You shouldn’t try to lift a garage door whose torsion springs have broken, so at this point, it’s best to call out an engineer.
  • The hinges are obstructed – Make sure there’s nothing that has fallen on your garage door’s hinges, or that they aren’t blocked from moving.
  • Your garage door is locked – This one sounds silly, but it happens more than you think! Check to make sure you haven’t left your garage door locked, or if there are any bits of metal obstructing it from lifting properly.

And, if after everything is said and done, you find that none of these are the issue plaguing your garage door, it might be time to phone an engineer. Anglian engineers are on hand to visit you at home and diagnose the issue easily and safely.
