4 Seasons of Home Ownership: Fall 2017 - Today's Homeowner

Home Health: Top Tips for a Healthier Happier Home
The home should always be a place for relaxation – somewhere you can put your feet up and feel good after a long day. Yet small things, such as noisy neighbours or cluttered rooms, can quickly become a cause of stress and discomfort.
Find out how to achieve a healthier home environment, and how making small changes in regards to light and sound can make a big difference.
Let the light in
Not only is natural light great for health, it’s also important for happiness. Proven to trigger serotonin in the body (colloquially known as the happy hormone), everyone should make sure their home is filled with sunlight.
Prevent your home from feeling dark, dull and dingy by opening up your curtains when possible. If you’re worried about passers-by looking inside, you can purchase specialised blinds that let plenty of light flood in, but obscure the view of anyone walking by.
You may also wish to install larger windows, a skylight or add a conservatory to your home to maximise the amount of light filtering into your home.
Introduce more plants to your home
Houseplants are a wonderful addition to any home. Not only do they look beautiful, recent studies have also found that they’re brilliant for purifying the air around them too.
In fact, we have an entire guide about the health benefits of houseplants, and how to choose and care for your new, green family members.
Peace Lilies, Spider Plants and Philodendrons are wonderful plants for any home. The Spider Plant is a great choice for damp areas, like bathrooms, due to its ability to absorb mould and allergens from the air, while Philodendrons are a favourite with Pinterest lovers, due to their appearance and ability to remove formaldehyde from the air. The delicate Peace Lily detoxifies the air too, removing toxins like ammonia and benzene.
Silence unwanted noise
Every home should be a sanctuary, and a place to unwind with family or friends. Unwanted noise can ruin a peaceful evening, but there a couple of things you can do to keep things quiet.
First, identify the source of the noise. If your neighbours’ TV is too loud and disturbing sleep, for example, rearrange the layout of your bedroom. Position the bed as far away from the noise as possible to dull the sound.
Sometimes, thin walls can also cause a problem. A fairly inexpensive way to soundproof the home is to purchase soundproofing panels, which can be fixed to walls easily. If the source of the noise is outside however, you may wish to upgrade your windows to double or triple-glazing. Don’t forget about the importance of fencing and outdoor plants either. Both are surprisingly good at deflecting noise if you choose wisely.
Keep things tidy
Clutter can have a huge impact on your wellbeing, often becoming a source of distraction and stress for many. Tidy up and add more storage if you’re struggling to find a place for particular items, and you’ll quickly discover you can relax and concentrate better at home.
Storage doesn’t have to be in the form of heavy furniture like a chest of drawers, or a permanent fixture like wardrobes, either. Utilise the space under your bed or stack decorative boxes neatly and use them to store documents or knick-knacks.
Introduce calming scents
Surround yourself and your home with comforting and calming scents, either in the form of candles and diffusers or from a natural source, like a lavender plant. Jasmine, rosemary, peppermint and the scent of fresh linen are popular choices – simply pick something that makes you feel good.

Extreme Weather: 6 Ways to Protect Your Home Come Wind or Hail
With recent extreme weather events across the UK, we’ve decided to gather some advice and helpful hints and tips, just in case you’re unfortunate enough to be caught in terrible weather this Autumn and Winter. Our first and foremost piece of advice is to stay safe and our following helpful tips which will hopefully help you take care of your home.
1. Batten Down the Hatches
Between falling trees and broken windows, the cost of the average storm claim in Britain can sometimes be as expensive as a luxury holiday. However, there are lots of ways to minimise the damage caused by gale force winds. Trimming tree-branches, especially those near roofs and windows is very important. It’s worth checking your fences and roof for any loose components and to secure any garden furniture in a garage or under a sheet of tarpaulin.
2. Prepare Your Pipes
A burst pipe in winter can be a miserable affair, so ensure you take steps to avoid this sudden disaster. The best way to avoid a burst pipe is to lag your pipes (cover them with insulating material) and keep the heating on, especially if you’re going to be away on holiday or visiting relatives. There’s nothing quite like having no water to fill the kettle after an icy drive home from the airport!
3. Get Some Grit
We’ve read the headlines warning us about the dangers of snow and ice on winter roads. For icy driveways, it’s important to stock up on a bag of grit in good time, and not to wait until the shops run low. It’s also good to pack the car with a de-icer, scraper and blankets, just in case.
4. Stay Above Water
Flood damage can be very expensive! If your home is at risk of flooding, there are valuable steps you can take in advance. You might consider replacing carpets with hard floors. It’s a well-known fact that water and electricity don’t make a friendly couple. Minimise this danger by moving plug sockets up to a higher point on the wall and keeping valuable electrics such as computers and TVs well above the potential water-line.
5. Lights Out!
At best, blackouts can be quite exciting but they can be a total nightmare if you’re not adequately prepared. Make sure you’re stocked up on torches, batteries, and even a portable phone charger. Other supplies like matches, candles, blankets and dried food are important to keep at hand. With any luck, you’ll be well prepared, and all you’ll need to worry about is which spooky story to tell the kids!
6. Inspect Your Insurance
This may sound like an obvious one, but it’s important to double-check that you are adequately insured both for your property and its contents, in case the worst should happen. Consider any renovations or major purchases you’ve made in the past year which could affect your claim, and review your insurance as appropriate. No matter what the British weather has in store, you’ll sleep more easily through the storm knowing you’ve got adequate cover.

How To: Choose And Care For Your Houseplants
Now you’ve got some incredible fruits and vegetables growing in your garden thanks to our Vegetable Growing Cheatsheet, we thought we should create an infographic to help you choose the best houseplants, dependent on the level of care and attention they require.
Recent studies have found that houseplants are really good for you! They help with breathing and purify the air, they can improve your immunity to illness and speed up recovery rates for surgery patients, and to top it off they’ve also been proven to help you concentrate on work.
Colin Campbell-Preston, horticulturalist and manager of Capital Garden Centres London, says: “Not only do house plants produce oxygen to circulate through the home, many also battle harmful airborne impurities. The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a prime example of this, capable of fighting benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene. Some of these substances are found in household items, and exposure can be hazardous.”
With all of this in mind it’s probably worth looking through our houseplant guide to see which plants you’d like to bring indoors based on the level of commitment you’ll need to keep them healthy.
