What are flush casement windows?

The window world might be ever-evolving, but we’re here to keep you up to speed on all the latest home improvement trends. You’ve heard the term, but have you ever wondered what flush casement windows are, exactly? Don’t worry – we’re here to lift the curtain.

The basics

You can spot a flush window if it sits flush within the frame. They don’t have normal lipped exteriors like other casement window styles. Here, it’s all a flat surface from the outside, which gives a very sleek, clean finish.

Flush casement windows aren’t a new advancement in window technology, either. As a style, they’ve been around since the 19th century – their ability to age so well is due largely in part to their versatility. There are very few property styles that this style doesn’t accommodate.

What kind of flush casement windows are available?

Flush sash windows

The better question here is, what kind of flush casement windows aren’t available? These days, they come in just about every material and colour, and can be customised with a range of window furniture. The sky’s the limit.

Flush-style windows were originally made with timber, but in recent years have expanded to include low-maintenance uPVC and aluminium. You aren’t even limited to a casement design when it comes to the flush style – they’re also available as sash windows.

What property style do flush casement windows look best on?

Like we were saying – there’s really no limit to the property style with which flush casement windows work. Their versatility means they can be customised for virtually any home design.

Because they’ve been around for so long, it’s tempting to say flush casement windows are best placed on older properties. However, their modern, sleek appearance makes them particularly attractive for newer properties, too. Depending on the colour and material you choose, your flush casement windows can sit pretty on just about any home.

Do you have flush casement windows? How did you style this versatile design? Let us know in the comments below!

7 things we can do now that the clocks have gone forward

Now that the end of March is upon us, the clocks are going forward and bringing with them lighter nights! We know Daylight Savings Time isn’t always met with universal happiness, but we’d like to make a case for that hour’s disappearing act. Not only will the sun shine longer and later, but there are also wellness and security benefits of Daylight Savings Time too.

If you’re still on the fence about the time change, here are our seven things you can now do that might change your mind.

1. Go outside!

Daylight Savings Time getting outside

Now that the days are longer, you’ve got more time to head outside in the evening, or stay outdoors in general. It’s one of the main benefits of Daylight Savings Time. Gone are the days of us holing ourselves up in our front rooms by the TV because it’s too dark outside to see. The barbecue, picnic and general romp around in the garden season is just about here.

2. Enjoy more natural light

The whole point of implementing Daylight Saving Time was to allow us to enjoy more natural light – so enjoy it! Open the windows or sunbathe in the conservatory. Natural light not only gives us a much-needed boost of Vitamin D, but can help improve our moods, too.

3. Have an excuse for being late

Sometimes the time change just slips right by without us even noticing. If you find you’ve missed an appointment or are an hour late, repeat after us: “I’m so sorry I’m late. I forgot to set my clock forward an hour for Daylight Savings Time!” Use as necessary.

4. Save energy

A big thought behind starting Daylight Savings Time was, if there was more natural light, we wouldn’t have to use as much energy. Granted, things like heating and appliances have more or less cancelled this out in recent years, but play your cards right and you could cut your energy bills. And we love any opportunity to be a little more planet-friendly.

5. Stay in bed

Daylight Savings Time stay in bed

While we obviously enjoy going outside, we’ll take any excuse to get a little extra time in bed – and losing an hour in the middle of the night is definitely reason enough. Studies have shown that Daylight Savings Time can actually have negative effects on health because of sleep loss, so just tell anyone that criticises your sleeping in until noon that you’re just looking after yourself.

6. Feel a little safer

Studies have also shown that crime tends to decrease after Daylight Savings Time. Because criminals like to operate in the dark, longer days means they have less opportunity for break-ins. This means you can rest at home feeling just that much more secure.

7. Leave work in the daylight

Last but not least, there’s nothing better than leaving work in the evening to endless sunshine. The day is still yours, and the walk to your home, car or bus stop is just that much better. Pretty soon, we won’t need to wear a coat when heading outdoors either – think about it that way, and Daylight Savings Time is about to become your new best friend.

#ProjectSpotlight: A conservatory in perfect harmony

Sometimes one conservatory style just won’t cut it. What happens when you love the long open space of a lean-to but are equally impressed by the gorgeous design of an Elizabethan roof? That’s where a harmony conservatory comes into play.

Mr and Mrs Matson in Kent knew they wanted to replace their more than 20 year-old conservatory, and when it came down to it opted for a blend of two styles: a garden room and a Victorian design. They’ve got all the space a garden room affords but with the light and stunning panels of a Victorian roof, all in white uPVC. Plus, they went for bi-fold doors to separate the conservatory from their dining room. It’s an expert blend of style, tradition and modernity that undoubtedly brightens up their garden.

Harmony conservatory exterior before and after

Here’s what Mr and Mrs Matson had to say about their harmony conservatory replacement:

Q: Why did you decide to install a conservatory?

A: We wanted to replace our previous one, as it was more than 20 years old.

Q: What made you contact Anglian in the first place?

A: At a previous property we lived at, we had Anglian windows installed and were pleased.

Harmony conservatory interior

Q: Did you speak to any other companies, and if so, what made you decide to choose Anglian?

A: We spoke with the person that previously installed our old conservatory, but decided to go with Anglian because we were very pleased with the sales representative and liked the fact that we would get a guarantee.

Q: Can you tell us if or how the visit from the sales representative helped you in your decision?

A: Our sales representative was exceptional. He knew what he was talking about and was very accommodating.

Q: What factors determined your final choice of style, colour and material?

A: The quality of the product. We liked that the new frames were more refined, meaning you could look out into the garden more. We also loved the idea of bi-fold doors.

Q: What’s your opinion of the Anglian service and installation you received? Did you have any particular concerns or requirements?

A: There was a slight hiccup in the middle, however, Anglian dealt with it efficiently. Everyone that stepped into our house was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Everyone—in particular our sales representative—knew what they were talking about.

Q: What’s the BEST thing about your new installation and what main differences have you noticed since having your installation? I.e., reduction in energy bills, is your home warmer, has the sound been reduced, etc.

A: The best thing is that our conservatory is more “useable”. It stays warmer and is easier to heat. The internal bi-fold doors are also an asset to the conservatory, as they really open up the dining room.

Sometimes, you shouldn’t have to choose between conservatory styles – why have one when you can have two? Check out all the different ways you can mix and match conservatory designs here.

#ProjectSpotlight: All over Anthracite Grey

How do you give your home a facelift short of completely remodeling the exterior? Just ask the Rolfe family in Norwich. With new windows and patio, French and front doors, all in a sleek Anthracite Grey, the Rolfe’s cream-coloured home got a seriously modern upgrade with approximately zero walls knocked down.

Their home’s transformation started with a brand new front door. It’s an ultra-modern composite door in the Naples style with a long bar handle and clear glass panels that gives their entryway a supremely smart look. Matching Anthracite Grey windows and doors around the back came next to help maintain continuity throughout the house’s exterior.

When everything was said and done, the Rolfes were left with a home that’s all over fresh and all over beautiful.

Naples door before and after interior

Here’s what Mr and Mrs Rolfe had to say about their new Anglian windows and doors:

Q: Please can you explain why you decided to have your windows and front door replaced?

A: We wanted to update our window frames, which were made of wood, and to eliminate drafts from poor quality frames.

Q: What made you contact Anglian?

A: Anglian was one of three companies we contacted.

Q: Did you speak to any other companies, and if so what made you decide to choose Anglian?

A: Yes, two others. Ultimately we choose Anglian because of price and product, but also their reputation.

Q: Can you tell me if or how the visit from the sales rep helped you in your decision and final choice of style, colour and material?

A: Yes, definitely. We discussed with him style and possible options.

Q: What’s your opinion of the Anglian service and installation you’ve received? Did you have any particular concerns or requirements?

A: Very good, and no concerns.

Q: What’s the BEST thing about your new installation and what main differences have you noticed since having your installation? I.e., energy bills, is your home warmer, has the sound been reduced, etc.

A: Firstly it has transformed the house, and it definitely feels warmer.
