Spring cleaning tidying tips

Spring is in the air! That means it’s time to send dirt and clutter packing and breathe new life into your home with a good old-fashioned spring clean.

Knowing where to start with a cleaning overhaul can be tricky. Luckily, we’re here to help with our top tidying tips that’ll not only reduce the time you spend cleaning but also the effort – that means more time spent with family at the weekend and less time slaving over a mop.

Wardrobe

Organising your clothes is the first step to mastering the rest of your home. Our advice is to look at every piece individually. If you haven’t worn it in the last two years, consider taking it to a charity shop. Don’t be a sentimental about clutter – you’ll never find the clean space you want if you hold onto unnecessary items.

Start by splitting your items into three separate piles: one for ‘keep’, ‘donate’ or ‘bin’. From there, try organising according to colour or by style (work wear, going out clothes, gym clothes, etc.). This’ll help you save time and reduce stress in the morning.

Clean aluminium window

Windows

When you’ve invested in beautiful windows, it’s important you keep them looking spick-and-span. The type of windows you have will dictate how you clean them – cleaning uPVC windows is different than how to clean aluminium windows, so you should read up on your windows ahead of time to make sure you’re using the right method.

A top tip to making your windows glisten is to clean them on an overcast day – that way the sun won’t dry up the cleanser and leave streaky marks before you finish. This’ll leave you with clean, streak-free windows!

Oven

Spring is the time of the year when everyone starts to clean all those hard to reach to places that, admittedly, only get cleaned once in a blue moon. Deep cleaning the oven is one of those dreaded jobs, as it can be a bit tricky.

A handy trick of the trade for making your oven sparkle is using a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Simply mix the two together, pour over the interior of your oven and let it sit overnight. In the morning, all you need to do is wipe off the excess grease with a sponge – your freshly-cleaned oven will be revealed!

Clean bedding

Bedding

We all know we should regularly clean our pillowcases and sheets, optimally every two weeks. The real question is, when do you clean your actual duvet and pillows? Ideally, you should throw these in your washing machine a couple of times a year. We can all be guilty of neglect in this area, but it’s important that our bedding gets a thorough clean once in a while to keep it in good condition.

Refrigerator

It’s important to tackle cleaning your fridge from the inside out, as there’s arguably nothing worse than a fridge that smells of stale food.

Start by clearing out all the food in your refrigerator and throw away any half-full spreads or neglected jars you haven’t used in a while. Then, all that’s left to do is wipe down the shelves with a sponge before reshelving the food you want to keep. A top tip is to cut a lemon in half and put one piece on your fridge’s top shelf and one on the bottom – this’ll give your fridge a naturally-fresh smell.
