#AnglianAnswers: What is a composite door?

If you’re in the market for a new front or back door – or, let’s be honest, even if you aren’t – you’ve probably been offered a composite door, in addition to the traditional options of uPVC, wood or aluminium. You’ve heard they’re great, sure, and incredibly stylish, but what exactly are they? And how can they help improve your home, both with comfortability and appearance?

Don’t worry – we’ve all been there. Now, you won’t have to stare back blankly when the home improvement expert at your office starts telling you about their brand new composite door. You asked, and we answered: Just what is a composite door?

The breakdown

While other doors—uPVC, timber or aluminium—are made of just a single material, composite doors are made up of many. This usually includes glass-reinforced plastic, solid timber and/or uPVC which, combined, creates a door that’s an incredibly good insulator and is impact resistant.

Composite doors first came about as a measure to alleviate shortcomings that can sometimes arise with single-material doors. This way, we take all the benefits of those single-material doors and create a stronger, more secure door that will last for many years to come.

Composite door side view

At Anglian in particular, we offer two types of composite doors. They are:

  • Classic GRP – Our Classic GRP doors are made of impact-resistant glass-reinforced polymer and then fit into an insulated uPVC door frame. Coated in a veneer, the door becomes water-resistant and therefore weather protected, while the inside is filled with foam for extra insulation.
  • Elite – Our Elite doors are made of a combination of a solid timber core, a wood lipping and a finish that’s the equivalent to 10 coats of paint (plus the additional option of added foam for higher thermal efficiency), all of which make for a door that’s incredibly strong, hard-wearing, energy efficient and weather resistant.

Benefits

Aside from the fact that they’re particularly strong, long lasting, secure and energy efficient, composite doors have the added benefit of being especially customisable.

In addition to being available in a range of styles, composite doors also come in a wide variety of colours and finishes, including woodgrain. You’ll also have your choice of door furniture and decorative glass to make sure your door exactly matches your aesthetic.
