Your ultimate guide to colour
Decorating with bright, bold colours can be a little intimidating without a colour guide – and as much-loved interior designer Sophie Robinson said in her guide to using colour, a fear of bright hues often leads the less-adventurous retreating back to reliable magnolia.
Colour in the home is often seen as something that either works or it doesn’t. And while that’s sometimes true, we’d argue there’s a case for just about every colour pairing, even the wildly unusual.
But if you’re just preparing to dip your toe into the colour pool and need a little nudge in the right direction, we’ve developed a fail-safe colour guide that breaks down home favourites. We’ll show you which shade works for what element of your home and what colours pair best together, including a few surprises.
Red
Variations: Deep red, burgundy, wine, maroon, cranberry, crimson, strawberry
Best for:
- Limited furniture
- Accent walls
- Decorative extras
Red is one of those colours that has the power to stop people in their tracks. Most of the time it’s used as an accent – with a bold chair, a warm front door, or as the dominant colour in wallpaper – but don’t be afraid to really wow with a striking wall. Generally, the deeper the shade of red, the less eye-watering it’s likely to be.
Colours that go great with red: Black, navy blue, gold, white
Surprise colour match: Cranberry and mustard
Yellow
Variations: Mustard, lemon, cumin, yellow zinc
Best for:
- Accent colours
- Patterns
- Textiles
Yellow is a colour that’s easy to overdo, but when it’s done tastefully, it can add a lot of warmth and sophistication to a room. Mustard is a particularly popular colour at the moment, used in a fun, modern prints and made less brash in soft velvets.
Colours that go great with yellow: Slate, navy blue, concrete, cranberry
Surprise colour match: Mustard and teal
Green
Variations: Emerald, pine, sage, mint, eucalyptus, kale
Best for:
- Wall colour
- Furniture
- Accents (plants!)
For obvious reasons, green is a fantastic colour for evoking the outdoors, especially when paired with natural wood grains. Light shades of green like sage and mint work really well for country-style homes with shabby chic interiors, while dark, earthy hues – though bold – look a little more modern.
Colours that go great with green: Gold, black, teal, grey
Surprise colour match: Kale and baby pink
Blue
Variations: Navy, midnight, cerulean, teal, duck egg
Best for:
- Wall colour
- Velvet furniture
- Textiles
Blue is quite possibly one of the most versatile colours there is for a home – you can go dark for a cosy den or keep things light and bright for a neutral, airy look. There are very few colours that don’t go with blue, depending on what shade you choose, which makes it a particularly fail-proof wall colour.
Colours that go great with blue: Grey, mustard, baby pink, gold
Surprise colour match: Midnight and rose gold
Grey
Variations: Slate, smoke, mist, granite, pewter
Best for:
- Calming walls
- Neutral furniture
- Wood finish
In recent years grey has been the “it” colour for interiors, as it’s a great neutral that has an undeniable air of sophistication. It’s especially good for those embracing the Hygge trend, as it follows the Scandi culture of paired-back interiors, and can be dressed up or down, depending on secondary colours.
Colours that go great with grey: Rose, mustard, midnight, white
Surprise colour match: Mist and plum

#ProjectSpotlight: Pitched porch
Porches aren’t just snug little spots to tuck away wellies and the post – they’re a guest’s first glimpse into your home. For this week’s #ProjectSpotlight, we went inside the Broadmeadow household in Harleston to see how their brand new porch helps create memorable first impressions, while helping bolster their home’s energy efficiency at the same time.
The Broadmeadows opted for a beautiful white pitched porch in uPVC and Anglian’s Winchester door with decorative glass. With gold accents and double glazing, it creates the perfect welcome that’ll stay warm all year round.
Q: How long have you lived in your property?
A: We have been here since October 2000, so just over 14 years.
Q: What was the reason for wanting to have a porch installed?
A: The old porch was very dated and we wanted to improve the look of the house. Also, the original porch area was very cold in the Winter.
Q: What was the most important thing for you when considering a porch installation?
A: Quality and price.
Q: Did you receive quotes from more than one company?
A: No, we usually do on such matters, but we were happy with what Anglian could do for us and the price was right.
Q: What was it that made you choose Anglian?
A: Reputation. Also, my mother-in-law – who lives in Yorkshire – had Anglian windows fitted several years ago, and they have been problem-free.
Q: Were you happy with the service received from Anglian, from sales to installation?
A: Yes. Very helpful. Also, during the installation a suggestion was made to the interior which we hadn’t considered. We took the suggestion on and it is a definite improvement over the original plans.
Q: What is the main benefit from having a porch installed?
A: It’s less cold in the Winter months and improves the entrance to the house.
Q: What is your favourite feature of the porch?
A: The front door.
Q: Has your Anglian porch improved the appearance/saleability of the property?
A: Very much so.
Q: Would you recommend Anglian?
A: Yes, very much so.

#ProjectSpotlight: Sage green garden room
The Anglian team recently visited the home of Ms Clayton and Mr Thomas to give their garden room a stylish upgrade. We built a uPVC garden room in a fresh sage green, creating space for a cosy sitting room that completely transforms their backyard – it’s the perfect place to enjoy the Spring sunshine.
Here’s what they had to say about their Anglian experience:
Q: Please can you explain why you decided to have a conservatory installed?
A: Our existing DIY conservatory was too small and in need of major maintenance.
Q: What made you contact Anglian in the first place?
A: Anglian was included in a range of quotes. We regarded Anglian as a quality installation but possibly too expensive.
Q: Did you speak to any other companies, and if so what made you decide to choose Anglian?
A: Yes. Some were clearly cut price but we were suspicious of build quality – for example, some said we could use the existing base. Anglian was a bit more expensive than the other “quality” quotes, but only marginally.
Q: Can you tell me if or how the visit from the sales rep helped you in your decision and final choice of style, colour and materials?
A: I think we had ideas for the style, colour and material but the sales rep advised what was possible.
Q: What’s your opinion of the Anglian service and installation you’ve received; did you have any concerns or requirements?
A: The black plastic on the door handle has partly come off. The installers were efficient and cleared away all mess.
Q: What’s the BEST thing about your new installation and what main differences have you noticed since having your installation? I.e.: energy bills, warmer, sound reduced, etc.
A: The reflective roof is effective in keeping temperatures down in the Summer, which means we get a lot more use out of our conservatory.

Live a life in colour!
A bright New Year should be filled with colour! So many homeowners want to recreate the swoon-worthy interiors seen in glossy magazines or on Instagram feeds, but the fear of using colour creeps in and they retreat back to…magnolia. This winter, Anglian Home Improvements has teamed up with top interior designer Sophie Robinson to discover the best ways for UK homeowners to live a life in colour.
Known for her passion for colourful interiors, Sophie is a go-to for providing inspiration and advice on how to let your personality and individuality shine through in your home.
“If I had one mission in life,” Sophie said, “it would be to play a part in making people’s homes more colourful. While I splash colour around my own home with wild abandon, I’m aware that for most folk it can be a thing of terror and dread. I’ve therefore pulled together six top tips that’ll encourage self-confessed colour-phobes to experiment with a multitude of different hues and embrace the endless possibilities and transformational qualities of colour.”
1. Paint it!
First up, invest in a pot of paint. I’m serious – for the price of a paint tub and a weekend with a roller in your hand, you can totally transform the look, feel and vibe of any room. My mantra is to just go for it – it’s only paint!
2. Expect the unexpected
Use colour in unexpected ways. I’ve got a thing at the moment for painting the doors in my house surprising colours because it just makes me smile. But why not start off with a bold new hue for your front door? Nothing gives a great first impression than a bonny bright colour, so don’t be afraid to stand out.
3. Accessorise with colour
For the faint-hearted, I’d suggest going neutral for the big ticket items like the sofa, flooring and curtains and then adding the colour with accessories. A bold feature floor rug, brightly-coloured lampshades, scatter cushions and wall art all combine to make an interesting scheme – but can easily be changed and updated over time.
4. Find YOUR colour
Choose a cohesive colour palette and use this to design all the rooms in your home so there is some flow. While you’ll want each room to be different, it helps if they work as a set. It’s really important to dig deep and work out which colours and hues resonate with you. If you’re stuck on where to start you can begin by looking in your wardrobe to see the colours you naturally pick out.
5. Start with a sample
I often start with a colourful wallpaper swatch or a fabric sample to build a colour scheme around. You’ll find a combination of colours which all sit nicely together, neutrals through to brighter accent colours.
6. A magic number three
I find that three is a bit of a magic number when pulling a scheme together, with the hero colour being around 60-70% of the scheme (think walls, floors or large pieces of furniture) then the secondary colour being around 20-30% (for example soft furnishings) with the final accent colour around 5-10% (that’s cushions, artwork and vases). You can add neutrals in with this – I call them a free colour, and can be found in wood flooring and furniture, for example.
Adding colour into your home can be a daunting prospect, but these top tips from Sophie are inspiring ways to brighten up our homes in the dark days of winter. What colours will you be adding to your home this year? Let us know in the comments below!

Get one step ahead of interior trends in 2018
2018 is finally here and we’re all interested in finding out what the new interior trends will be for the year ahead.
So what are the new colours, materials and revivals for 2018? To let us in on the secret, we have teamed up with Chloe Spillett, winner of our national Styled By Me competition which was designed to celebrate the nation’s passion for home improvements and on-trend interiors. The mother of two and successful DIY and interior blogger wowed guest judge Sophie Robinson – a much-loved interior stylist – with her astounding eye for detail, strong colour scheme, as well as her devotion and love for all things interior design.
On her interior design predictions for the upcoming year, Chloe commented, “I’m delighted to share what I believe will be this year’s top interior trends. I’m hugely passionate about interior design and I hope by sharing my top trends for 2018 it will inspire others, ignite a creative flare and encourage those to redesign or update the style of their homes – even the smallest of changes can make a huge difference.”
Here are Chloe’s top four trend predictions for 2018. Now where are those paintbrushes…

Chloe Spillett #syledbyme winner
- Bold Earthy Tones
We’re talking deep petrol blues, sassy saffrons, emerald greens and rich rusts. This can be achieved through adding accessories to the home, including soft furnishings such as cushions or beautiful pictures and paintings or smaller items such as vases or candle holders. Grey neutrals have dominated interior schemes for a few years now but has grey had its day? I think olive grey could be a winning alternative to break the mould.
- Statement Staircase
Forget feature walls and floors; you only get one chance to make a lasting first impression and what better way to showcase your home than with a stunning staircase? Step away from neutrals and reach for those bold earthy shades; paint your spindles and risers and let your stairs speak for themselves.
- Head Turning Terrazzo
I absolutely love this retro trend and couldn’t be happier to see it making a comeback. Marble has been ever popular throughout 2017 but I predict Terrazzo to be a serious rival in 2018. Terrazzo is a mixture of polished cement and marble, or granite chippings, which is polished up beautifully giving it a stunning shiny, smooth finish. It’s so versatile with a range of colours and patterns and can be used as flooring, on walls or in kitchens as worktops. Perfect in maximalist and minimalist schemes alike.
- Raw and Natural Materials
Ok, so not exactly hot off the press but this trend is here to stay and with good reason! 2017 saw a wave of interiors adorned with concrete pots and planters, untreated plywood, OSB (a personal favourite) and corrugated metals, and I for one still can’t get enough. It’s great news for those among us who are working on a tight budget; these materials are easy to source and extremely affordable. They can easily be incorporated in the home, whether it’s updating the external façade, new flooring or incorporating it in small finishing touches; there are many ways to make it work for any home or budget. For an updated twist I love to mix up textures and styles so I’d love to see some opulent velvet soft furnishings thrown into the mix. Divine!
Chloe is an exciting up-and-coming interior designer and her winning entry to our Styled By Me competition proved how bold, playful and on-trend her own personal sense of style is. Chloe’s interior ideas are very inspiring and something all homeowners can easily incorporate into their own schemes for an instant update.
