If You Own an Older Home, You May Want to Consult a Professional to Check Your Plumbing

“Good bones” - we’ve heard many older houses described this way. It’s intended to mean that an old house is solid, suitable for living, stands the test of time. The trouble is, when people brag about their old house’s “good bones”, they probably aren’t referring to the plumbing. And bad, out-of-date plumbing can destroy a house’s good bones in short order.

Case Study: Whole House Anthracite Grey

We’ve got another case study to explore; an Anglian transformation of windows, doors and rooftrim! Mr and Mrs Goodrum have let us showcase their beautiful home to new energy efficient windows, doors and rooftrim in a stunning ‘anthracite grey’ colour. They’ve also given us their testimonial:

Q: Why did you decide to have your windows, doors and rooftrim replaced?

A: Desire to replace maintenance overhead to existing wood windows and rooftrim, together with improving energy costs.

Q: What made you contact Anglian?

A: Reputation and brand awareness

Q: Did you speak to any other companies, and if so what made you choose Anglian?

A: Chose Anglian over other companies because of professionalism coupled with available choice of products and overall package.

Q: Can you tell me if or how the visit from the Anglian sales rep helped you in your decision and final choice of style, colour and material?

A: Visit from rep was the deciding factor. Very knowledgable, professional and explained the whole range of styles (together with colour samples) to allow us to select the most appopriate for our property.

Q: What’s your opinion of the Anglian service and installation you’ve received; did you have any particular concerns or requirements?

A: Very pleased with overall service, was concerned that existing tiles in the kitchen would get damaged but the new windows were skillfully installed without causing damage.

Q: What’s the BEST thing about your new installation and what main differences have you noticed since having your installation? i.e. energy bills, warmer, sound reduced etc.

A: Best thing is the improvements made to the “kerb appeal” of our property as it now looks very neat and tidy and this will remain the case without requiring any maintenance. We have seen a reduction in drafts and have been able to keep the property warmer without increasing energy bills.

Hygge: The Best Lifestyle Trend For Winter

Hygge has been the topic of many lifestyle blogs and magazines for the past year or so, but what is it – and how do you say it? Our blog explores the meaning of Hygge and how you can embrace this lovely and cosy lifestyle trend in your home.

Firstly, hygge is pronounced like “hoo-ga” and derives from Denmark. There is no direct translation for the Danish word yet it is more of a concept than an object or thing. Apparently hygge has been a key part of Denmark’s culture since the 1800s and could be attributed to their happy, healthy population: currently the number 2 happiest country in the world for 2017! The UK discovered hygge originally in 2016 but it is still prevolent as winter comes back around for us. Hygge is easy to incorporate into your home and you can find inspiration from Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest – especially as Pinterest noted it was one of their ‘hottest home decor trends for 2017‘.

So what does hygge mean exactly? Well the closest English word that can be matched is ‘cosy’ but it is more the feeling that cosy inspires in you, that hygge describes. Which makes hygge more of a way of life for Danes and definitely something us Brits can try to implement here too.

Here are some ways to bring Hygge into your home:

Blankets – essential for warm and cosy times around your home throughout winter. Don’t just settle for one, get many for each room too to really be able to wrap yourself up.

Armchairs – great for reading and winding down in with a blanket and warm drink. Even more inspiring if they’re looking out of a window or you’re able to cuddle in them.

Warm drinks – go for the extra marshmallows and cream on your hot chocolate and indulge in the delicious warm taste. Great for evenings or after long walks by the sea or countryside to warm up from.

Fireplaces – these can really inspire a sense of relaxation, from their magical, beautiful and traditional flames that can warm us quickly and naturally.

Knitwear – this could be jumpers or socks! Anything knitted that you can snuggle up in on your armchair or in front of the fireplace.

Candles – scented or not, candles evoke a sense of cosiness too which is idyllically hygge.

So what else can evoke hygge? Food is a great topic which is also known to us as “comfort food”. This could be hot pies, roast dinners, baked cakes and honey glazed vegetables. Eating these traditionally warm winter foods with family and friends is also considered hygge as togetherness is a form of the danish lifestyle trend.

So are you embracing hygge already without even knowing it? Why not try to be more hygge, get some fluffier blankets and invite your friends over for a hot chocolate in front of the fire. You’ll feel yourself relax quickly and be able to make Winter a slightly more enjoyable season.

To find out even more about hygge, why not try the The Little Book of Hygge by Miek Wiking.

Let There Be Light!

It’s that time of the year again, where the dark days and long nights of winter are slowly drawing in, but instead of preparing to hibernate, why not awaken your humble abode with a bright flash of light!

At Anglian Home Improvements we believe preparing your home for the winter months is essential, we’ve have been lucky enough to team up with renowned interior designer Sophie Robinson, who has shared her tricks of the trade on how to embrace the use of light in our homes this winter.

Interior Designer Sophie suggests that the big question on all our lips at this time of year is how to brighten up our home, “One of the things most people ask me about A LOT is how they can make their homes feel lighter and brighter. Inspired by the fashionable Scandinavian look that celebrates all things pale and interesting, this burning question isn’t about to go away.” To help inspire homeowners, Sophie has set out five easy-to-follow tips on how to inject get a bolt of light into even the darkest rooms.

Choose your colour carefully

Rule number one is NEVER go for pure white walls in a darker room, as it will just appear lifeless and dull. Opt for gentle recessive colours, pale tints with a cool hue like blue, grey, lilac or green. They work to make your room feel larger and lighter than it really is. Then pop the colour in accessories and furniture for more depth and interest.

Embrace natural light

Make the most of natural daylight by opting for neat blinds at the windows, which can be fully drawn away from the opening. A roller blind that tucks into the recess will work a treat or for something more luxurious go for an interlined roman blind, but mount it above the lintel so it can be drawn clear of the window and let that lovely daylight flood in.

Reflect the light

Use reflective surfaces to bounce the light around the room. This could be a gloss painted floor, or even the ceiling! Alternatively introduce glass, polished marble or mirror furniture into the scheme. Painting your windows and sills in a high gloss paint also helps to bounce the daylight that comes in through the window.

Highlight with lighting

Good lighting is key to any interior, but as the winter evenings draw in it becomes even more effective. The aim shouldn’t be to awash the entire room with light, instead think about highlighting various key areas. For example, position a ceiling spot light or low pendant light over an area of interest like the dining or coffee table. Next, have plenty of lamps and floor lamps, ideally on a 5amp circuit so you can control them from the wall switch. This combination will create a layered look, which is always preferable to one lonely pendant light, or a ceiling full of indiscriminate down lighters.

Mirror image

Finally a well-positioned mirror has to be one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it doesn’t make it any less effective. Go large and position opposite the window to maximise its light-giving potential.

These handy top tips can be used by all homeowners, whatever your personal taste or style. We hope Sophie’s tips have inspired you to inject light and brightness into your home this winter!

How To: Clean uPVC Doors

Your door is the first port of call for any visitor, so it’s important to maintain it and keep it looking its best. It can be hard to know the best way to clean your door, especially if you’ve never thought to do so before! Therefore, we’ve got some helpful tips to give your uPVC door a thorough clean and get into all the hard to reach places too.

To clean the glass and main panels in your uPVC or composite door, we recommend using warm, soapy water – simple, but effective.

Wash the door down with the warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge. Micro-fibre cloths are fantastic as they remove stubborn dirt and prevent scratching or damaging the door.

Avoid using bleaches or any cleaning materials that could scratch the door such as a scouring pad – they will damage the finish of the door and this will void your warranty.

Products to avoid:
• Scouring pads
• Methylated spirits
• Bleach
• White spirit
• WD40
• Iron wool

To remove the dirt and debris build up between the door frame, especially along the bottom, if you don’t have a brush nozzle for your hoover, you can build your own one to get in all of the nooks and crannies. All you need is a toilet roll cardboard tube.

This fits over a lot of hoover nozzles, you just have to cut or bend it to a shape that will get into those hard to reach places. The image below is a good demonstration of this.

Top tip: It is really important to hoover your sliding patio doors regularly in the channel where the doors slide – dirt and debris will affect how smoothly they operate.

If you continue to clean your doors in this way regularly, they will stay looking like-new for years to come!

If you’re looking for advice on cleaning windows, then you can find helpful tips and instructions here: How to clean uPVC windows.
