How to Build a Birdfeeder to Help Them Thrive During Winter
Coming up this weekend is the annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, a UK-wide event in which the charity asks adults and children to spot and count their garden birds. It’s the world’s largest wildlife survey, and Sainsbury’s Bank has created a fun and child-friendly guide to building a bottle bird feeder to help.
Not only is it an easy way to get the whole family birdwatching, but it’s also an excellent activity to help out our feathered friends during the colder months. So grab a plastic bottle and some coloured pencils, and start counting your garden birds!
It’s not just the birds we need to help out during the colder winter months, there is a whole plethora of wildlife in your garden that could do with a little helping hand. From creating log piles to preparing soil for the summer, all of which will create a home, food source and protection from the elements.
Read more about protecting wildlife over winter here.

How to Keep Fit In Your Home
As much as it pains me to write this, staying fit and healthy comes with a hard work and patience. You need to eat healthily and exercise daily, if possible, however, it is much easier said than done!
If you’re not a member of a gym, be it because it’s too expensive, inconvenient or you’re self-conscious and uncomfortable in a gym, what can you do to keep fit? The solution – find time and a space to exercise at home!
Finding the Space
Whether you’re main focus is cardio or you’re looking to tone with weights, finding space for machines, dumbbells and barbells can be a bit tricky although, it’s not impossible – you may just have to re-imagine the use of a room.
A conservatory can make a really good exercise room! Open windows allows plenty of fresh air to flow through, you’re surrounded by natural light and they tend to be spacious enough to have small to medium sized fitness machines housed here.
If you’re lucky enough to have a large conservatory, you could kit it out with a mix of cardio machines and weights.
Norwich City Football Club has two Anglian conservatories at their training ground, one of which is a gym. The players regularly use this to work on different aspects of their fitness.
If you have space in the garage, this should be another area to consider for a workout room. Have a tidy, throw out stuff you no longer need and create a little area dedicated to keeping fit and healthy. If you have dumbbells or barbells, you could even hang hooks on the wall to store them without taking up floor space.
Apps & Personal Trainers at the Click of a Button
The rise of smart phones has seen personal trainers move into the world of apps and social media, making them readily accessible. I caught up with Kent, a personal trainer from MSP Fitness in Norwich, to discuss how you can get fit at home and how apps have changed his regimes.
When I say, “hey it’s time to get fit”, I bet the first things that come to mind are “go to the gym” and “I need a diet plan,” right?
Going to the gym and eating healthily has always worked and been the way forward, but with the pace of modern living and technology advancing so quickly, so have the many ways to get fit and stay healthy.
You no longer need to have a gym full of equipment. You also don’t need to go on the latest fad diet to slim down. Nowadays you can control every part of your health and fitness journey from your smartphone.
Many apps show you what exercises to do, have YouTube videos that demonstrate workouts and gives you food ideas. There’s also calorie counting apps that allow you to scan bar-codes and help you control and understand how much you’re eating – the list of apps available is endless.
However, with all these tools at your fingertips, you’d think it’d be simple, right. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case and it’s confusing knowing which apps, workouts and food plans are right for you.
MSPFitness Online Coaching
After four years of being a qualified personal trainer, I decided I wanted to take what I had learned and help as many people as possible, and with the aid of modern technology, it is reasonable to say that now I can.
I’ve created an easy to use app that is tailored to you, ensuring your personalised exercise plans and diet advice will help you reach your goals.
One of the best features about this apps is the 24/7 contact with your personal trainer via instant message! So if you have a question, need help, advice or motivation we are right here for you, day and night.
We can also monitor your workouts live, so we can immediately see the impacts of how well you’re doing. This also allows us to make tweaks and changes to your workout straight away, therefore, keeping your workouts up to date and exciting, just like we do for our daily face to face clients.
The benefits don’t stop there either! You don’t need an expensive gym membership or to pay the price you normally do for a face to face personal trainer. You can workout at home with little or no equipment, train in a gym or club of your choice and have a qualified personal trainer right there with you every step of the way, without paying out hundreds of pounds a week.
For the next 7 days you can get a 30 day trial on the MSP Fitness app for just £1!
Finding Motivation
This is the hardest part about keeping fit, especially when you’re doing it at home. It’s very easy to find a poor reason to not exercise, especially after a long day at work.
Some people set themselves weekly or monthly goals, others put pictures of themselves on the fridge to motivate, whilst other people are super organised and plan their whole month’s worth of food and exercise. Being prepared and organised is the best way to ensure you succeed!
However you plan on getting fit this year, we’d love to know how you stay motivated, your progress and any advice you have for others wanting to start out. Get in touch via Facebook or Twitter.

Giving a Homeowner a Helping Hand - Today's Homeowner
from Danny Lipford - Home Improvement - DIY - Videos https://www.todayshomeowner.com/video/giving-a-homeowner-a-helping-hand/
Energy Efficiency Myth Busting
We’re all looking for ways to reduce our energy bills and make our homes as efficient as possible. Improving insulation in the home, installing double and triple-glazed windows and being aware of our personal energy consumption all have positive effects on the environment and our energy bills, but what else can we do?
The internet is saturated with energy-saving tricks, many of which are completely false. We’re here to dispel the myths, and highlight the few gems that actually are speaking the truth.
Electric is cheaper at night
Many people think running appliances at night is cheaper due to demand being considerably lower than it is throughout the day. There is, in fact, a glimmer of truth in this tip but for the majority of people it really won’t make a difference.
If you are on an Economy 7 or 10 tariff, your electricity provider will charge you according to demand. With less people active at night, it is actually cheaper for you to do your washing later in the evening. However, every other tariff is charged equally no matter what the time of the day.
Verdict: Partly True
Turning up the thermostat will heat up your home quicker
It’s a common misconception that cranking up the temperature will make a room heat up faster.
Of course, the higher the temperature the warmer the room will eventually become but a higher temperature will not increase the speed at which heat is distributed. No matter what, it will take the same amount of time to heat the same room. The only way to speed up this process is to improve your home’s insulation.
Verdict: False
Painting radiators black makes them more efficient
Darker objects are known for being better at absorbing, and then emitting, heat. With science behind this, many people assume painting a radiator black will increase its efficiency.
This would be true if radiators actually transferred most of their heat through radiation. However, despite their misleading name, radiators actually transfer heat through convection, meaning heat is transmitted by a mass motion of fluids – colour has nothing to do with it.
Verdict: False
Placing tin foil behind a radiator can conserve heat
With reflective properties, placing tin foil behind a radiator can conserve heat. Specialised radiator foil can be purchased, but ordinary tin foil works just as well.
Heat often escapes at the back of a radiator, being lost into the wall. Placing tin foil here prevents this, forcing the heat back into the room.
Verdict: True
Electric can still be consumed even when devices aren’t in use
We all know that we shouldn’t leave the TV on standby, but many of us think that not using the microwave or pressing the off button on a PlayStation is enough to stop energy from being used.
Often referred to as vampire power, energy can still be drained by appliances when they’re ‘turned off’ or not in use. Even when a device is completely detached from the power source, for example disconnecting a phone from a phone charger, power can still be drained by the charger.
Verdict: True
Solar panels don’t produce energy on a cloudy day
If you’re considering installing solar panels in your home, you might have heard the rumour that they can’t generate energy on a cloudy day. If this was the case, it’s safe to say they wouldn’t be very useful at all with our gloomy British weather!
Solar panels are most effective when the sun is shining, but they are still able to produce energy on a cloudy or rainy day. Sunlight can still reach the panels, and particular models are designed to absorb a broader range of light, such as UV and infrared light which are present on cloudy days.
Verdict: False
It’s better to leave the lights on, than turn them off and on continuously
A myth that seems to circulate to this day, many believe that it’s better to leave a light on if you’re leaving a room for a short period of time rather than switch it off and on again. People assume that a surge of energy is required to turn on lights, making it more cost-efficient to simply leave them on.
All of this is completely false, no additional energy surge is required. So there’s really no excuse – don’t forget to switch off the lights whenever you’re not in the room!
Verdict: False
With all of those energy myths completely busted, you can be confident that your home isn’t draining unnecessary energy. If you have any other energy myths or tips you’d like share, let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

4 Energy Saving Products You Should Invest in this Year
Here at Good to be Home, we’re always on the lookout for the latest technology that can reduce our carbon footprint and help save you money on your energy bills. We’ve put together a list of products you should think about investing in this year to try and change the impact you have on the world.
You may not be able to change the world by yourself, but new Smart Home technology can help change your own little world!
Smart Home Systems
This is the future of all homes, from Apple’s Homekit, Google’s Nest to Amazon’s Echo, they are all able to control features within your home. The energy saving aspect of this comes with the ability to control your thermostat, lighting and electrical switches, meaning you only heat your home when you’re in, lights are only on in rooms you are and switches will turn off when not in use!
One big difference between Amazon’s Echo and Apple and Google’s offering is the voice control. Alexa, the AI within Echo, is your personal assistant, learning your habits, speech patterns and more to give you a personalised service.
Alexa can turn on music for you, help you with simple searches online, check train times and even order a takeaway from Just Eat. It truly is a unique gadget.
Smart LED Lightbulbs
LED lightbulbs are great at reducing your energy consumption, especially when changing them from old bulbs and tubes. The light is brighter, they last longer and they tend to be between 80-90% more efficient.
Combine this with your Apple, Google or Amazon technology and you’re in full control of your home, only using the lights when needed.

Smart Appliances
The majority of electrical goods now come with an energy rating, so if you’re looking for a new TV, refrigerator, microwave or washing machine, ensure you get an eco-friendly one. The most efficient appliances are A+++ rated, whilst the lowest score is a D rating.
Things to look out for when buying a new appliance:
- The energy rating on 2 differently sized appliances may be the same, but they will use different amounts of energy. A larger appliance will use more energy.
- Check how much the annual cost for an appliance will be – the higher rating doesn’t ensure you’ll spend less, although it will be efficient.
- Time delay features are great if you have cheaper electricity at certain times of day. Schedule your washing machine or dishwasher to do it’s job during these cost-effective hours.
- If your appliance has different modes, check how much they use each year too. The energy label will show the most efficient modes over the course of a year. If it’s not a mode you’d use often, it may not be the best appliance for you.
New windows & Doors
Draughty and inefficient windows and doors could be costing you a fortune every year. You’re literally throwing money out of the window by trying to keep your home warm and comfortable, but the cold invading your home will make it an expensive battle.
Combat it with new A++ rated triple glazed windows and A rated composite doors. They will prevent as much heat escaping, stop draughts and provide you with better security and sound insulation!
Again, with windows and doors, there are energy labels, so whichever company you look to go with, have a good look at their energy labels and ratings.

Random acts of kindness: Anglian celebrates A++ efficiency with an A++ competition!
Feeling those January blues? Need a little something to brighten your day? You’ve come to the right place. At Anglian, we’re all about those little things that give your day a bit of a lift, whether it’s coming home to a cosy, warm house, a tasty meal to look forward to, or a completely random act of kindness.
A big part of what we do at Anglian is to help make sure your home is as warm, cosy, and efficient as possible. Our triple glazed window has been awarded an incredible A++ status for performance efficiency, which means these windows are excellent at keeping the heat in your home, gaining heat from sunlight, and the level of air leakage when they’re closed.
To celebrate our most efficient window to date, we want to bring everyone a little extra happiness by introducing our competition to help customers have an A++ day too!
We’re launching a competition across our Facebook and Twitter accounts, in which we’ll be asking our followers to rate and describe their day in a social post using the hashtag #APlusPlusDay. Once a week for the next 3 weeks, we’ll choose one lucky winner to receive a little prize to help turn their average day into an A++ one!
And finally, to help spread the cheer, we’ll also be providing some handy tips on how you can shun those January blues – check out our Facebook and Twitter to learn more. Our competition is running from Monday January 9th to Friday 27th, so make sure you get your social posts in!
To read more about our new window’s A++ rating, take a look here.

What Will Be Your Home New Year Resolutions?
We all make New Year’s resolutions for ourselves, be it losing weight, joining the gym, eating healthier, going out more, spending less money or travelling the world, but how many of these do we actually stick to?
Apparently many of us will break these resolutions by the 17th January. So we thought, rather than focusing on ourselves with resolutions we can’t stick to, let’s focus on ones for our homes instead. The best resolutions are achievable and show a tangible effect – the ones we’ve come up with below will ensure a happy new year for you and your home.
Extending
We’re starting with a big project! If this year you want a change for your home because you need extra living space to enjoy all year round, then an extension is the resolution for you!
You have a few options and they will vary in cost, but all will give you a beautiful space to use however you please.
A conservatory is a cost-effective way to give your home extra living space and with today’s technology, it is one that’s usable no matter what season it is. Letting light flood in, conservatories make great dining rooms, living rooms or a casual reading room.
To add a luxurious room to your home go down the route of an orangery. The solid walls means you can utilise the wall space for cupboards, hanging pictures or shelves, whilst the lantern roof provides natural light and a glorious view of the sky. An orangery can be used however you please, but one of our favourite uses is a kitchen like the below.
Alternatively, if you already have a conservatory with a glass roof that’s a bit tired and inefficient, a solid roof replacement could be an option. Take advantage of the modern designs available, which combine a tiled roof with roof glazing.
A Deep Clean
This one is so easy to achieve and something you should do more than once a year, but why not start the year afresh with a wonderfully clean home. Get the carpets cleaned, wash down the walls of any dirty marks that have accumulated over the year and any grease or grime that’s built up in the kitchen.
Check those hard to reach places for cobwebs, clean your windows and doors and don’t forget to clean your oven!
Refresh The Décor
A fresh lick of paint or a complete restyle of the interiors of your home will make no end of difference. Whether it’s moving furniture around in your living room, changing your feature wall or embracing the Pantone Colour of the Year (it’s Greenery), a newly decorated home can be reinvigorating.
New Carpets
You don’t have to change the whole look of your home with paint and wallpaper, a change of carpets is often all that’s needed. If your carpet has become worn, dated or no longer matches your interior design, it’s time for a change.
New furniture
If after a deep clean your home’s décor is looking great, but the furniture is in need of an update, then take advantage of the January sales! There’s plenty of fantastic products on offer during this time, so bring in the new.
Alternatively, if Christmas has broken the bank, reinvent your current furniture by giving it a makeover. Sanding wooden furniture down, giving it a lick of paint or reupholstering the fabric on dining chairs or sofas can be a cheaper way to update your home.
New Windows & Doors
This is possibly something you’ve been putting off for a while, but if the draughts and bedraggled look are just too much to handle, now is the time to renew your double glazing and front door!
Although a little more expensive than the other resolutions, this one will save you money year after year if you opt for A-rated windows and doors. The range of styles, colours and finishes for windows and doors is massive, so you can really personalise your home.
Whichever home New Year’s resolution you choose, let’s try to make it one you stick to! Let us know your New Year’s resolution on Twitter or Facebook.
